Electric Vehicle (EV) Guide: All You Need to Know

Electric vehicles (EVs) are a powerful source to battle global warming, yet their effect differs significantly from each country, and in some nations, they pollute more than gasoline vehicles. Moreover, despite some enhanced efficiencies such as replacing lead or nickel with lithium-ion batteries and excellent retaining energy, the vehicle still faces challenges like the thermal runaway.

Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)

  • BEV - uses a massive traction battery pack to power the electric motor and must be plugged onto electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). The plus point of BEV is: less noise uses rechargeable batteries and no exhaust, clutch, spark plugs, or gears. The typical time for charging this car ranges from 30 minutes to 12 hours, depending on setting station speed and battery size.

The critical element of these vehicles is the battery, DC/DC converter, battery pack, electric traction motor, charge port, transmission, power electronics controller, onboard charger, and cooling system.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV)

  • PHEV - provide a combination of petrol-diesel power and battery, making it the best for long-distance journeys, switching to conventional fuels rather than battery top-up. The downhill for PHEV is emission, more maintenance, petrol cost, more miniature battery packs, and engine noise.
