Indian IT giant - Tech Mahindra is working with blockchain start-up StaTwig on a global blockchain-based product for tracing vaccine supply chains. The IT company said the VaccineLedger blockchain is created to enhance transparency & prevent vaccine supply failures, including expired vaccine distribution, counterfeiting & stock depletion.
VaccineLedger, an open-source platform to perform end-to-end traceability at vial vaccine levels in the global supply chain. It prevents the need for the replacement of the existing system, thereby removing the adoption barriers. Through this partnership, StaTwig & the IT giant will build a global consortium of govts, healthcare workers, vaccine researchers, distributors & pharmaceutical firms.
The blockchain firm will leverage Tech Mahindra's go-to-market expertise, including customer network & access to sales, balance sheet support, system integration insight, domain experience & resource scale. Further, Tech Mahindra has invested in testing & co-development of numerous enterprise security modules for the web application & mobile to support state govts & manufacturers' unique needs.
This is not the first time an IT giant has shown interest in blockchain solutions. Last year, it started working with local edutech company - Idealabs to create blockchain talent in India & later publicized it will provide blockchain solutions to global customers using Amazon Web Services (AWS). Tech Mahindra blockchain & cybersecurity practice leader - EMEA & APAC Rajesh Dhuddu said, "Our partnership with StaTwig will enable supply chain customers with a single application to improve the chain of custody & traceability."
He said this will not only ensure the validity & safety of vaccine supply and aid in adherence to complex regulatory needs and set up Drug Administration Authority in any country. A blockchain-based product builds peer-to-peer bridges on existing systems that support real-time data sharing, validation & authentication. Vaccine creators can use such data beyond trace & tracking to inventory management, IoT integration, smart contract & vendor payments.
